Exterior Doors (2014)
Repaired the historic wooden doors of the church.
After the successful completion of the Library Door restoration, Friends began planning to restore the remaining exterior doors. Decades of weather and environmental pollutants had left the historic wooden doors of the church damaged and in need of repair. Following a successful fundraisng campaign in early 2014, the remaining exterior doors which are original to James Renwick's 1874 design for the church were repaired and painted in their original color.
Exterior Library Door (2013)
The exterior door to the library on the north side of the church was repaired by the congregation of Second Presbyterian.
The exterior door to the library on the north side of the church was repaired by the congregation of Second Presbyterian. Friends contracted with Bob Furhoff, an architectural conservator, to do the paint analysis and identify the original color used on the exterior doors in 1874. In August 2013, the door was repainted in the original color by Shamrock Decorating, completing the project.
Northwest Corner Project (2013)
Repaired water damage to the northwest corner beneath the balcony.
The plaster surrounding three windows (and on the ceiling above) located in the northwest corner of the first floor of the sanctuary had been damaged by water leaking from a radiator above. In March 2013, Kelly Plastering repaired the damaged plaster and replicated the damaged decorative trim and crown molding, creating a custom mold of the pomegranate trim to fabricate the replacement piece. Architectural conservator Bob Furhoff performed a finishes analysis to identify the original paint colors used in the sanctuary. These historic colors were replicated when the northwest corner was painted following completion of the plaster repair, restoring the original color scheme that hadn’t been seen in decades.
Front Door Refinished (2010)
The old growth walnut front door was in need of cleaning and protection.
Shamrock Decorating, Inc. performed hand cleaning with TSP and power tool sanding on the front entry door. A coat of Sikkens Cetol stain system was applied to the wood, followed by a coat of Sikkens Cetol varnish.
